During her lengthy career, Phyllis served as a district nurse for school districts in Oak Park and Bellwood, where she led many efforts to better nutritional offerings in schools, promote handwashing, and make the role and importance of the school nurse more defined and visible across schools. Discussion includes her experience in veterans affairs nursing including overseas nursing in the Philippines, school nursing reform and procedure modernization, activism, and programming; and the implementation of the Corporate Community Schools of America program in Chicago’s west side, and the importance of having a presence in professional nursing organizations as a black woman.
