Mary Maryland

Dr. Mary Maryland is a UIC alum, currently practicing as an LPN in the Chicago metropolitan area. She is a graduate from Chicago State University, and is the seventh black woman to receive a PhD in nursing at UIC. During her career, Dr. Maryland has served as president of the Illinois Nurses Association, and as an elected member of the American Nurses Association, who testified before congress supporting reform in the nursing legislature. Beyond nursing, Dr. Maryland served as a reserve officer in the Air Force, and as a diversity consultant for NASA. Interview includes discussion on completing a PhD at UIC, racial politics in nursing, being a nurse during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and nursing education in Rwanda. Interviewer was Karen Flynn.
