Mapping Care Project: The History of Black Nurses in Chicago

Jo Ann Dean began her career in public service as a secretary and administrator in Chicago, working for Chicago Police. She transitioned to nursing and received her training at Kennedy King, a City College of Chicago. Although she held positions at a number of Chicago area hospitals, the bulk of Jo Ann’s career was spent working in Cook County Hospital on Chicago’s West Side, where she worked in a number of positions as a nurse, an administrator, and in nursing leadership. Discussion includes Jo Ann’s work with all matters of HIV/AIDS care, from bedside nursing to religious activism and awareness campaigns, and the stigma of receiving a diagnosis for patients. Also discussed is racism in Chicago’s neighborhoods, and the challenges faced by Cook County Hospital. Interviewer was Gwyneth Franck.
