She later earned a bachelor's in psychology from Northwestern University and a Master's in Public Health at UIC. She worked as a nurse and in nursing leadership in the northern Chicago suburbs before being hired to work as an advocate and lobbyist for the Illinois Nurses Association. She served as the INA's nursing practice administrator and later as deputy executive director, a position she held for 16 years, where she lobbied on behalf of nursing organizations and nursing interests at the state capitol in Springfield. Discussion includes the passage of nursing legislation in Illinois, political representation for nurses, and racism encountered living in Chicago's suburbs.
