Mapping Care Project: The History of Black Nurses in Chicago

Note on Numbers

The wide range in numbers here comes from the varied numbers offered in different sources and reflects the reality of Black healthcare in this era. Black hospitals were often makeshift affairs that arose out of need in rural areas with little healthcare access. These hospitals could be a single room with minimal equipment, and a nursing school might simply consist of a few student nurses providing patient care. These hospitals and schools often appeared and disappeared quickly, making them hard to track. For a range of numbers see: Anchrum, “A New Era in the Fight…,” 3; Hine, Black Women in White, 9-10; Gamble, Making a Place for Ourselves, 3; Carnegie, need citation.
