Mapping Care Project: The History of Black Nurses in Chicago

Carrie Bullock, Pioneer of the Chicago Visiting Nurse Association

Carrie Bullock, a graduate of Provident, served with the Chicago Visiting Nurses Association (CVNA) for over forty years, from 1909-1956. She eventually rose to become supervisor of the Dearborn substation, holding the position from 1926 until her retirement. Bullock was widely respected for her work, receiving a special award from the CVNA in 1950 in recognition of her 40 years of service. At the ceremony, the superintendent of the CVNA stated that Bullock “is a credit to her race, or any race…and an example to us all” for her patience and devotion to her patients and the nurses who worked under her. The Chicago Tribune, in remarking on her retirement, called her “[o]ne of Chicago’s most distinguished senior citizens.” 1
